2 Life Tweaks that Can Help You Lose Weight

Article posted in: Diet & Nutrition

Yesterday we addressed small tweaks you can make to your diet that will help you lose weight over the course of a year if you apply them daily. Today we’re going to talk about two changes you can make to your daily routine that can yield similar results.

The first is something as simple as drinking water. You know that you should be drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, and more if you exercise a lot or live in a warm place. But countless studies have shown that drinking water can help you lose weight, too. Drinking a big glass of cold water as soon as you wake up jump starts your metabolism into fat-burning mode. And drinking a couple glasses of water before meals causes you to feel fuller and thus eat less.

The second is called the One Mile Challenge. Think about how many places you go like stores, schools and offices that are within one mile or so of your home. Then think about how often you drive your car to these places. If you replace these car trips with walking or with a bicycle trip, you’ll burn extra calories (about 100 calories for each mile you walk; 50 or so for every mile you ride) and save money on gas and wear and tear on your car. There’s an environmental benefit, too. Cars emit the most pollution right after they start. Short trips emit the most pollutants. If you walk one mile to and from a store 17 times a month, you’ll burn enough calories to lose a pound. Do that for 12 months and you’ll have lost a cool 12 pounds.
